PostHog vs Plausible vs Umami for analytics

Once you launch, you'll want to know whether anyone's turning up and what they do when they get there. Plausible and Umami are the simple, privacy-friendly option: one tidy dashboard of visits and where they came from. PostHog is the full toolkit, with product analytics, session recordings, feature flags and error tracking. They count usage in slightly different ways, so check the units before you compare.

How we check

The answer

To start, PostHog and Umami both cost £0.00 (PostHog includes 1 million events a month, Umami 100,000). Plausible has no free plan, but Starter is £6.74 a month for 10,000 pageviews, or about £5.62 a month if you pay yearly. At 2 million events a month, PostHog and Umami Pro come out the same at £37.45. Choose on what you need to see, not just on price.

What does it cost to see how people use your site?

PostHog

Free (1M events and 5,000 session recordings a month) or pay as you go above that

  • Everything in one place: what people click, recordings of real sessions, feature flags and error tracking. The free allowance is big and doesn't need a card.

Autocapture records clicks and other actions as well as pageviews, so one visit can be several events. You need a card on file to go past the free limits, and free recordings are only kept for a month.

Plausible

Starter $9/mo (10,000 pageviews, 1 site), Growth $14, Business $19; 30-day free trial

  • A clean one-page dashboard anyone can read in seconds. It doesn't use cookies, which keeps the privacy side simple.

Custom events count towards your pageview tier. Go over your limit two months running and you'll be asked to upgrade, and dashboards lock if you don't. Prices above the 10,000-pageview tier weren't shown on the page we checked.

Umami

Hobby free (100,000 events, 1 site) or Pro $20/mo (1M events, up to 20 sites)

  • A generous free plan, a simple dashboard, and you can run it on your own server for free if you'd rather.

The free Hobby plan covers one website and keeps 6 months of data. Extra events on Pro cost $0.00003 each.

How we worked it out

  • PostHog: the first 1,000,000 events are free; 1 to 2 million cost $0.00005 each. 1,000,000 × $0.00005 = $50 × 0.7489 = £37.45 (37.445).
  • Umami Pro: $20 includes 1,000,000 events; the next 1,000,000 × $0.00003 = $30. Total $50 × 0.7489 = £37.45 (37.445).
  • Plausible Starter $9 × 0.7489 = £6.74 (6.7401). Paying yearly gives two months free: $90 ÷ 12 = $7.50 × 0.7489 = £5.62 (5.6168) a month.
  • Plausible counts pageviews plus custom events against your tier. Its page didn't show prices above 10,000 pageviews, so the 2 million row says Not priced.
  • Units differ slightly: PostHog counts events (pageviews, clicks and anything you track), Umami counts events including pageviews, and Plausible counts pageviews and custom events.
  • Excludes VAT and session recordings beyond PostHog's free 5,000 a month.
