What it is

PostHog shows you what people actually do in your app: which buttons they press, where they give up, and recordings of real sessions. It also handles feature flags and A/B tests, so you can switch something on for a few users before everyone. The free allowance resets every month and doesn't need a card.

Good for

  • Understanding how people use your product, not just how many visit
  • Trying a feature with a few users first
  • Small apps that fit inside 1 million free events a month

Watch out for

  • Autocapture can turn one visit into many events
  • Going past the free limits needs a card and is billed per event
  • Free recordings are only kept for a month

In comparisons

PostHog vs Plausible vs Umami for analytics

Free (1M events and 5,000 session recordings a month) or pay as you go above that

  • Everything in one place: what people click, recordings of real sessions, feature flags and error tracking. The free allowance is big and doesn't need a card.

Autocapture records clicks and other actions as well as pageviews, so one visit can be several events. You need a card on file to go past the free limits, and free recordings are only kept for a month.
