What it is

The OpenAI API lets your app call OpenAI's models from your server while it runs, for example to answer questions in a chatbot. You pay per token, the small chunks of text the model reads and writes, so cost grows with usage rather than a monthly plan.

Good for

  • Chatbots and AI features inside your own app
  • Screening user input with the free moderation endpoint

Watch out for

  • There is no free tier, and token costs are usage-based
  • Keep the API key on the server; never ship it in browser code
  • Set a project budget so a bug or abuse cannot run up a large bill
